Helly & John McGrother

9th May, 2012

solid circles, quilted fabrics, fluid wavesThe C P Snow connection … examines several resonances between art and science, including how some of these influence the world which we inhabit.

From furnishing to clothing, fabrics are perhaps the archetypal medium in combining aesthetics with functionality.  Helly’s experiments with quilting techniques using found fabrics evolve from her professional work in film and TV.

Cultural convergence is a feature of other items in this event, which show:.

…. on the one hand, how wood and other materials can be used, not only as unconventional furniture, but in areas such as the conservation of energy, the education and relaxation of children, and the production and rotation of food

…. whilst on the other hand, how the magnetism of such topics as chaos and harmonic resonance make subtle but fundamental contributions to the world, both artistic and functional, which we see and hear.

Furthermore, with our grandchildren in mind, it is revealed that the existential threats of not only climate-change but also the global economy’s energy-crisis are amenable to a single solution, which is a thing of liquid beauty.
